Sliema
Sliema is a relatively new town, developed in the late 19th Century as a summer resort for Valletta residents. Today, although devoid of any historical monuments or sites, it is Malta’s most important urban centre. Sliema is the island’s most fashionable resort with a string of good hotels and some of the finest rock bathing available.
Sliema is the best spot for designer shopping with an array of boutiques and big name department stores. Here also are the head offices of banks, insurance companies and other firms that deal in financial services.
The only disappointment for some holidaymakers who have been Malta’s repeat visitors for many years is that Sliema’s promenade, once lined with Victorian houses, has been replaced with tall, modern apartment blocks. Nevertheless, this has not deterred Malta’s glitterati from curtailing their popular evening pastime of strolling along the town’s famed sea front.
