Diving
What does Malta have that many other Mediterranean destinations don’t? Malta is completely pollution free. The Maltese have never experienced the effects of air pollution because Malta’s air is pure. Equally, the sea around the Maltese Islands is absolutly crystal clear and completely free of pollutants. Swimming and snorkelling, all around Malta, are a pleasure and so is diving for those who practise and enjoy this sport. Thousands of visitors holiday in Malta, individually, but many in small or large groups, especially for diving holidays both in summer and in Malta’s mild winter months. Because of that, a steady infrastructure of diving schools and of suppliers of diving equipment has grown and flourished both in Malta and in Gozo.
Diving has been a feature of Malta holidays for several decades and the tourism authorities in Malta have long been well aware of the attraction that the sea around the Islands has for divers. In order to provide divers with opportunities for underwater photography as well as for increasing divers’ interest in the Maltese seabed, several ships, once destined for the ship-breaking yard, have been sunk for the underwater pleasure of visiting and local divers. These wrecks, lying on the seabed several scores of metres below the surface, are well indicated by appropriate sign posting on land. They continue to provide divers with opportunities to explore, photograph and film the wrecks themselves and the various species of fish that have since made these wrecks their natural habitat.
